Reinventing the SunSentinel

About this site

This is it.

We were asked to reinvent the SunSentinel from the ground up. This is how far we could get in three months. It isn't the end, but a beginning, where we can further evolve our content and execution.

Although our median reader is in their mid to late 50s, our target audience is almost a generation younger. We're after occasional readers, people who don't feel they have the time or enough interest to read our paper on a regular basis.

Much emphasis has been placed on making content feel accessible, be easy to read and easy to find. We also hope to make the paper feel vibrant and energetic, much like the community it serves.

We wanted no doubt that this is a different paper. To that end, every piece of every print product we produce was touched, starting with our nameplate and the development of a superbrand for all of our products.

The new paper launched August 17, 2008. Thanks for visiting.

One-liners, selling personality

Lee Abrams talks often about selling your personalities. This was a way to get all a number of voices on one topic right out front and have a little fun with it at the same time. We've been doing a similar thing for our bloggers online.

Recipe Center

This is an idea for a self supporting recipe page for the food section. Because it generates revenue, the space supports itself while giving added utility to the reader. It works like this.

All the recipes from the section are collected together. (There may also be stand alone recipes.) Each recipe is formatted to a 4 x 6 recipe card size. It could look something like this:…
