SUNDAY ONLY: We're discussing some ideas for Sunday 1A. Tim is working on prototypes that will have two story starts on 1A - one the centerpiece, and a second spot for a special "Sunday only" story at the bottom of 1A.
Could be a good read about a local trend, a provocative off-the-news analysis or column, a profile, a Q&A that sets up something happening in the next few days. In addition, we might put the promos at the top of Sunday 1A, instead of digests at the bottom. So stay tuned, and let us know what you think. What would make the Sunday paper "special" for you?
DIGESTS: When we reinvent the Sun-Sentinel in August, the daily digest at the bottom of 1A will change. Check out the last few Sunday 1As to see the direction we're heading.
How will this change from what we're doing now on weekdays? Most days we have one large digest centerpiece promo and 8-10 smaller items with or without art. Most sections get at least one digest to stories in their sections.
Under the new plan, we'll have fewer than half a dozen items each day, so we'll be more selective. Each will have a prominent visual component. The digest should reflect the most interesteing content in the paper that day. Sections will "compete" for those spots. We will select those items at the morning meeting, so editors will need to come prepared with details about what is running throughout their sections in the next day's paper. Priorities:
We'll try to reserve one spot for the best "news to use" content in the paper, even if it means one section gets more than one digest.
Local, unique content - something readers won't find anywhere except in our paper or at sun-sentinel.com, or our own special look at some hot topic;
Content of special interest to at-risk reader groups like Hispanics, young families, people age 30-39. No, this does NOT mean that every story that mentions Hispanics or families or 30-39-year-olds will get an automatic digest.
Promos to other content could end up on Pages 2A and 3A (check out the posted prototypes for inside pages). Remember that there will be two or three big headlines at the top of 1A for major news stories and other kinds of content inside the paper worthy of getting a headline above the fold. And some features - like a special section - could get an overline at the very top of 1A.
